Veil of Veronica
A shroud is a plain piece of cloth used to wipe sweat from the face and hands. According to the Bible, the Jews used a shroud to cover the face of the deceased. Several legends tell of Jesus' shroud, as it was believed to have preserved his facial features. Jesus' facial features were preserved in a shroud offered to him by Saint Veronica. The shroud covered only the face of the deceased, while the rest of the body was wrapped in a shroud made of more expensive fabric.
Veronica (died 1st century) is the saint who gave Jesus a cloth to wipe his face on the way to the crucifixion, creating the image of a man's face on it. Veronica is not mentioned by name in the Bible, but in Catholic tradition she is commemorated in the so-called Stations of the Cross devotion at the sixth of the fourteen stations.
