Science and faith are not incompatible

Catholic scientists explore connection between-faith and science  For example, Maria Gaetana Agnesi (16 May 1718, Milan – 9 January 1799, Milan) was an Italian linguist, mathematician and philosopher. Agnesi wrote several books on both differential and integral calculus. She was an honorary member of the faculty of the University of Bologna. According to Dirk Jan Struik, Agnesi is "the first woman mathematician since Hypatia (5th century)".  The most important result of his work was the Instituzioni analitiche ad uso della gioventu italiana, a distinguished work published in Milan in 1748 and "considered the best extant introduction to Euler's works". The second volume, published in French in Paris in 1775, was translated into French by P. T. d'Antelmy, with additions by Charles Bossut (1730–1814). The complete work was published in English in 1801, translated by Professor John Colson (1680–1760) of Cambridge University. The "examiner" of the w...

Pentecost

Kuva
Pentecost  Pentecost is a Christian holiday dedicated to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the founding of the Christian church. Pentecost is celebrated seven weeks after Easter and ten days after Ascension Thursday. According to the Easter canon of the Western churches, Pentecost is at the earliest May 10 (last time in 1818, next time in 2285) and at the latest June 13 (1943 and 2038). The word Pentecost came to Finland from the Old Swedish words hælgho dagher (Finnish: "holy days").

List of Lay Catholic Scientists

Kuva
Above: "The Vitruvian Man" by Leonardo da Vinci   List of_Lay Catholic Scientists  There have been numerous Catholic scientists and researchers throughout history, and they have made significant achievements in various fields of science. Some of the most famous have been physicists, astronomers, and biologists. Catholic scientists have often sought to integrate their faith with their scientific work, considering faith and science to be compatible and mutually supportive.  Examples of famous Catholic scientists:  - Nicolaus Copernicus: Polish priest and physician who developed the heliocentric worldview (a sun-centered solar system).  - Galileo Galilei: Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer who developed new observational techniques.  - Robert Boyle: Irish naturalist known for his study of the properties of gases.  - Antoine Lavoisier: French chemist who was the "father" of the invention of chemistry.  - Pierre Teilhard de Chardin...

Ford Explorer 2021 (Moottori Magazine)     Ford Explorer 2021 (Car and Driver)  "The Ford Explorer recipe sounds delicious: a three-liter twin-turbocharged V6, four-wheel drive, space for seven and fuel consumption of just 3.1 liters per hundred. And all this with a wealth of equipment for only 84,323 euros in 2021.  363 horsepower makes this large car very light, and at full throttle, a pleasantly powerful growl fills the cabin.  Behind the V6 is a 102-horsepower electric motor and a ten-speed automatic. The total output of the package is no less than 457 hp, and the torque is 825 Nm in total. It propels the colossus to a hundred in six seconds. The feeling does not doubt the claim."

Veil of Veronica

Kuva
Veil of Veronica  A shroud is a plain piece of cloth used to wipe sweat from the face and hands. According to the Bible, the Jews used a shroud to cover the face of the deceased. Several legends tell of Jesus' shroud, as it was believed to have preserved his facial features. Jesus' facial features were preserved in a shroud offered to him by Saint Veronica. The shroud covered only the face of the deceased, while the rest of the body was wrapped in a shroud made of more expensive fabric.  Veronica (died 1st century) is the saint who gave Jesus a cloth to wipe his face on the way to the crucifixion, creating the image of a man's face on it. Veronica is not mentioned by name in the Bible, but in Catholic tradition she is commemorated in the so-called Stations of the Cross devotion at the sixth of the fourteen stations.

Science and the Catholic Church

Kuva
Society of Catholic Scientists  I have always been interested in science and engineering. I have even tried to advance them with my own modest contribution. However, I have never seen any conflict between science and faith. They mostly answer completely different questions.  People have, apparently due to ignorance, a completely wrong idea about the Catholic Church. The Church is in no way anti-science!  The link above provides an excellent introduction to the subject.  “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe...”  ― Albert Einstein

The Pope's name is associated with the artificial intelligence revolution

Kuva
Pope Leo XIV lays out vision for his papacy, identifies AI as a main challenge for humanity  New Pope Leo XIV chose his name as a reference to the artificial intelligence revolution.  Leo XIV has said that he chose his papal name because he wanted to be in the same continuity with the previous Pope Leo. Leo XIII was Pope from 1878 to 1903 and is known as a significant promoter of modern Catholic social thought. His encyclical Rerum Novarum raised issues of social justice, especially the rights of workers in the context of the second industrial revolution.  At present, we can consider that a new industrial revolution is at hand, as artificial intelligence develops and offers ever new opportunities and at the same time growing threats to humanity.  – Following our own time, the Church offers everyone its treasure of social teaching in response to the new industrial revolution and the development of artificial intelligence. New developments challenge human...

The agricultural machinery company was renamed Ford New Holland, but the tractor brand remained Ford. The New Holland tractor brand was born in the early 1990s, when the Fiat Group bought Ford's agricultural machinery business. In 1990, Ford decided to sell its ownership of its Ford New Holland agricultural and construction unit and in 1991 reached an agreement with the Fiat Group to sell Ford New Holland to Fiat Geotech. Both brands had long traditions in tractor manufacturing. Fiat Trattori manufactured its first model 702 in 1919. Fiat Trattori S.p.A. ("Fiat Trattori") changed its name to FiatAgri in 1984. Henry Ford began manufacturing Fordson tractors in 1917. Contrary to popular belief, the tractor brand name was not Fordson because the Minneapolis company was already selling a tractor called Ford, but because Henry and his so...

New books 5

Thomas Aquinas   I ordered Thomas Aquinas' book Angels and Philosophy :)  Angels and  philosophy contains sections of Thomas Aquinas' Summa theologiae, which deal with the scholastic doctrine of angels. Aquinas presented, among other things, completely new ideas about the theory of motion that differed from Aristotelian physics, as well as new conceptual openings to basic questions in cognitive psychology. Thus, the work offers an interesting and best-known theological-philosophical perspective on the discussion of angels from the perspective of the history of ideas.

Angelology

Kuva
Angelic hierarchy  I have always been very interested in angelology.  Angelology means the study of angels, the understandings of churches and theologians about angels. In particular, the term describes the systematic thinking and teaching of the Christian church about angels. But Judaism and Islam also have their own teachings about angels, their meaning, status and hierarchies. The three monotheistic religions of the world share the same understanding of angels as heavenly spirit beings and messengers of God, although there are differences.  The link above (Angelic hierarchy) provides more detailed information on the matter.

St. Joseph the Worker

Saint Joseph  Saint Joseph is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the stepfather of Jesus in the New Testament of the Bible.  Joseph was a carpenter. His symbols include the Bible, carpenter's tools, the infant Jesus, a lamb, a chalice, a cross, and a monstrance.  Joseph is venerated as a saint in both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, and is the patron saint and helper of families, fathers, refugees, stewards, engineers(!), home seekers, craftsmen (especially carpenters), and doubters.  In the Catholic Church, Saint Joseph is commemorated on May 1, the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker.

Ford Mustang 1971

Kuva
Ford Mustang  This is my favorite Ford Mustang model.  In 1971, the Mustang had reached its peak in size. It was longer, wider, and heavier than ever before and never since. The euphoria of the horsepower war was turning into a hangover, with federal regulations and the rising insurance premiums for muscle cars in the United States. By 1972, muscle cars were finally a thing of the past, and an era in the history of the Mustang and the American automotive industry had come to an end.

Divine Mercy Sunday

Divine Mercy Sunday  Last Sunday was Divine Mercy Sunday. Beautiful...  ♥♥♥  Divine Mercy Sunday is the 2nd Sunday of Easter (i.e. the 1st Sunday after Easter) in the Catholic Church, on the last day of the Easter Octave, or Easter Week.  It dates back to the apparitions of Saint Faustina Kowalska, which she recorded in her diary. According to Faustina's visions, great promises are requested for Divine Mercy Sunday: Whoever on that day comes to the fountain of life will receive forgiveness of sins and their punishments... On that day, the depths of my mercy will be open, I will pour out a whole torrent of grace upon the souls who approach the fountain of my mercy; ... let no soul fear to approach me, even if its sins are as red as blood.

Conclave begin on May 7th

Kuva
Conclave to elect new Pope to begin on May 7th  A conclave is a meeting of cardinals appointed by the Pope in the Catholic Church to elect a new head of the church, the Pope. Cardinals who were under the age of 80 when the papal seat became vacant are eligible to vote. The word comes from the Latin expression cum clavi (“with the key”), which refers to the election behind closed doors.  The conclave to elect the 267th Pope will begin on May 7th.

County tractors   Here is one of my childhood/youth dreams: Ford County!  The independent County company's Ford-based models were sold in several countries through the Ford organization. In most County products, all wheels were the same size and each front wheel had a separate propeller shaft. In addition, County built, among other things, high-clearance models and Four models with smaller front wheels before Ford had its own four-wheel drive versions. In addition to Fords, County supplied four-wheel drive technology to the IH and Leyland factories.  Isn't it a great machine? :)

Pope Francis´ funeral (BBC)  The funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26, starting at 10:00 a.m. Rome time, when Vatican Radio - Vatican News will broadcast the entire Requiem Mass live, followed by a procession with the Pope's coffin from St. Peter's Square to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he will be buried according to his wishes.  Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major) is the largest of the churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Rome. It was built in the 5th century on the ruins of an Augustan building. It is said that Pope Liberius (352-66) had a dream in which the Virgin Mary asked him to build a church for her in a place where it snowed. Snow fell on the Esquiline Hill on the 5th of August, and so the pope had a church built for Mary.

Easter Monday

Kuva
Easter Monday  On Easter Monday, the risen Jesus appeared to some women and disciples on the road to Emmaus. The disciples did not recognize him and were surprised by his question about whom they were looking for.  Gradually, the apparitions and the accounts of other witnesses convinced them that their Lord had truly been raised from the dead. He was alive and present in the church. The apparitions convinced them of his resurrection and his continued presence. The church lives in the company of the Risen One. The day commemorates the Harrowing of Hell.  Easter Vigil Mass will be celebrated tomorrow night. The Mass will begin late on Saturday evening.  On picture is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It is a church in Jerusalem, built on the site of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the tomb of Jesus Christ. It has been a popular pilgrimage site for Christians since the 4th century. The administration of the church is divided between six Christian denominations: the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Coptic Church, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and the Apostolic Church of the East.   Long Friday  Today is Good Friday. I'm going to go to mass today too :)  Good Friday is a Christian holy day, the Friday before Easter, celebrated to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Christ. It is the only feast of mourning in the church year.  In Old English, the day was called Long Friday (langa frigedæg) — referring to the lengthy observances of fasting and religious services, making it a day of extended devotion — and equivalents of this term are still used in Scandinavian languages and Finnish. Once a year I had it serviced for about €300 for the inspection. Apart from that, all I had to do was buy gas :)  I once drove about 120 km on the motorway as fast as the car could go (according to the speedometer about 170 km/h).  I ended up driving it upside down into a ditch. I wasn't going too fast but it was very slippery and when the car skidded onto the bank it rolled over surprisingly easily :o  Too bad. I would probably still have it. I <3 it :)

Palm Sunday  Tomorrow, 4/13/2025, is Palm Sunday.    Palm Sunday (palmusunnuntai) is a Christian church year celebration that is celebrated the week before Easter. Palm Sunday begins the so-called Holy Week of the church year, when we remember the suffering of Jesus.  The name of the day refers to the Easter story in the Bible, in which Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem. Those who greeted Jesus threw palm leaves in his path. The name in Finnish (palmusunnuntai) comes from Swedish, where the day is called palmsöndag. A similar name is also found in German, for example (Palmsonntag). Palm Sunday procession Maundy Thursday Good Friday Holy Saturday Easter Sunday Easter Monday
